PUTATARA
Shell trumpets used by the Maori made with the native NZ conch shell called Awanui.
KARANGA MANU (Bird Callers)
Karanga Manu
can be blown across the depression at the end like a bottle or side-blown like a Koauau to produce a range of calls.
POROTITI
The string is wound up then pulled rythmically, making the stone spin, which creates a "whirring" sound. Porotiti were known by several names and were used by the Maori as healing tools.
The vibration and movement was believed in ancient times to help free up conditions such as arthritis...and why not?
PUREREHUA (Bullroarers)
Known to have been used by some Maori tribes to bring rain. Also played at times of Tangi (funerals).
As the twist in the cord is what "drives" the Purerehua you will need to twist the cord or spin your Purerehua to start it flying.
