1 - SCULPTURES

SCULPTURES

I get the most enjoyment out of creating sculptural works, such as those on this page.
Often my inspiration comes from the forms I see within the natural form.

My carving has been described as "organic", using aspects of nature to create forms that have a flow about them, rather than creating a photographic replica.
You will see some results below.

All the sculptural works have my signature logo and the year of completion on them or their base.

SURFIN'
The name was inspired by the curvaceous piece of driftwood.
The stone above is "Kokopu" jade - also known as "Speckled Trout". The spots on the stone resemble the patterns on the "Kokopu", which is the Maori name for the NZ native 'trout'.

Pebble "Kokopu" inanga jade

WHAT CRIMES THE WHALES?
The Mere (traditional Maori club) buried in the whales tail is a symbolic act of war. I have a deep love and respect for all cetaceans and created this piece in response to the news that Norway intended to resume whaling.

Mere NZ jade  with  Muka  (NZ flax fibre) cord
Length 36 cm
Base Totara with lovely swirling grain

LARGE MERE
A mere carved from the sister slab to the one above.

serpentinite mere

LARGE SERPENTINITE MERE
A mere carved from a lovely piece of an altered serpentine found here in Golden Bay.
Though not jade this is a close relative.
It is a hard and very attractive stone, the photo doesn't quite do it justice - the lighter patches have a chatoyant (shimmery) glow .

Mere NZ Serpentinite  with  Muka  (NZ flax fibre) cord
Length 35.5 cm
Price NZ $1,000

stingray

STINGRAY
This stingray is carved from an Inanga jade pebble from an unusual source.

aventurine octopus

WHEKE
" Wheke" is Maori for the octopus.
This one is carved from Golden Bay Aventurine.
Though I found some Aventurine
years ago I've only recently found this source, and promptly carved this critter.
Unfortunately the photo doesn't show the chatoyancy in the stone.
This piece is leaning strongly towards the Fuschite end of the scale. (The green Mica in Aventurine is Fuschite so the difference here is only one of proportions
.)
The orange colour is the oxidised rind on the outside of the stone.

Occy Green aventurine pebble - Length   18.5 cm, width 13 cm.
Eyes 4mm Sapphires
Price NZ $750/SOLD

KAITIAKI
A guardian spirit carved from half a cobble (large jade pebble). This stone was a bit dull on the inside but the interestingly patterned and coloured rind inspired this chap.

Kaitiaki Length   22 cm
Base Driftwood ( Beech ?)
Price NZ $750

''TUNA"
Tuna is the Maori name for Eel. The milky colour of this stone is the unmistakeable mark of "Inanga" jade
.

Tuna "Inanga" jade pebble
Cave Harakeke woven by Pounamu.
Eye Australian sapphire
Size Pebble length   101 mm
Price NZ $400

BEETLE
This carving is made from a Thulite pebble I found while out troutfishing with my boys.
Thulite is a fairly rare stone, certainly in NZ, especially with the depth of pink colour that this piece has.
The eyes are blue Tourmalines (Indicolite).

Pebble Takaka Thulite
Size Pebble length - aprox  100 mm
Price

NZ $250

serpentinite bowl

THULITE BOWL
A bowl made from a stunning piece of local Thulite
.
A fairly rare gemstone anyway, this would have to be one of the most unusual Thulites I have found as the pink has crystallised in the matrix.

Pebble Takaka Thulite
Size Aprox  25cm x 20cm           Weighs about 4kgs
Price

NZ $450

SERPENTINITE BOWL
A
Serpentinite pebble with a bowl carved into it.
Serpentinite is an altered form of Serpentine, often with a rind like jade and a clarity that approaches Tangiwai(which is Bowenite, a metamorphosed Serpentine).

Pebble Golden Bay Serpentinite    Length 140mm
Price NZ $100

serpentinite bowl

SERPENTINITE BOWL
Another
Serpentinite pebble with a bowl carved into it.

MAHE  -  (Sinker Stone).
The stone above clearly shows the spotted patterns of "Kokopu" jade. The cord is plaited Muka, which is the fibre extracted from the leaves of Harakeke (NZ Native
Flax).
I have only polished the top, the underside is as it came from the river.
I do not sign the Mahe as I have only refined and polished what mother nature has created.
The Rimu base is made from a packing case that went to England then returned, probably close to 100 years ago.

Pebble "Kokopu" jade   Length 12.5cm
Base Rimu
Price NZ $175

mahe

The stone above is another example of Kokopu jade, again with a muka cord.
The whole pebble apart from a small area by the cord is polished.

Base Rimu
